Response To The
"Grow the Fuck Up" Manifesto

Grow the Fuck Up ManifestoWe: the creative, intelligent, self-confident, and eclectic,
...are tired of the "mature content" police. We believe that part of living in the real world is going to be offensive. And, when we are offended, we are brave enough when sufficiently offended, to peacefully and courteously confront that which offends us and try to resolve it on our own; it is our responsibility as human beings to do so.
Furthermore, when it comes to art, we are perfectly capable of picking and choosing what we will look at, and do not need a third party to "help" by enforcing a ridiculous system of scoring images as "mature" or "ideologically sensitive" or "violent."  We think such rules are ultimately pointless and intellectually demean everyone who follows, enforces, or has them enforced upon them. In short, if we don't like your art, we'll ignore it. If we really don't like it, we'll send you a private note or make a public comment clearly stating why. In other words, we don't nee

I: the creative, intelligent, self-confident, and eclectic,

...am tired of people using the word "we" as if they knowingly speak for the majority.

Now, reading the GFU Manifesto, I won't say that I entirely disagree. I agree that "part of living in the real world is going to be offensive. And, when we are offended, we are brave enough when sufficiently offended, to peacefully and courteously confront that which offends us and try to resolve it on our own; it is our responsibility as human beings to do so."

However, part of our responsibility as human beings is to accept responsibility for wrongdoings. In this case, that would be submitting works to a website that violate the rules that you agreed to abide by when creating an account. There aren't "'mature content' police" simply because there's something potentially offensive to someone on this [or any similar] website, but because, simply put, you broke the rules.

I know. Some people don't like the rules on deviantART, and think that such rules are "barbaric". I myself think that the Mature Content rules could be changed in many ways. But to be absolutely fair, if your art got removed because it violated the rules that you knowingly agreed to...

...you've only got yourself to blame.

I mean, is it really that difficult to follow the rules enforced by such a site? Not for most of the millions of people that accompany this community. But here's what I, as well as many others, believe: if you think the rules are too strict or perhaps even too lenient, and for some reason, you don't think you'll be able to follow them, do the "peaceful and courteous" thing, and don't sign up. That goes for every website, every congregation or community, every state, country or territory in the WORLD. If you don't want to abide by the community's rules, simply don't join the community. And if the community creates new rules that you don't like, leave.

Be mature about it, at the very least. Don't go writing a whole "Manifesto" on the subject, hoping to rally up believers in an attempt to go against what you yourself agreed to do. That's simply childish, like pulling a bunch of kids together to beat up some upperclassman you're jealous of. Even worse, grow-the-fck-up never even gave their name, or their other account's username - they're a ghost, so they don't have to take the heat when deviantART disagrees with them. All we know is that the GFU Manifesto was typed by some random anonymous character over a glass [or perhaps, bottle] of Jack Daniel's, while reading the collected works of an 18th century American political activist, possibly hoping that their attempts would eventually sum up to some minor digital version of a coup d'état. Frankly, it's shameful.

So all in all, yeah, some of dA's rules are a little off. In some ways, annoying. And you are absolutely welcome to express that in a mature manner. But if you absolutely hate the rules, the solution is simple. Leave the site so that the rest of us can enjoy the community that we all helped build.

But  content gets removed for reasons that are not clear. People need to learn that they can't dictate what others see. Censorship in any for is wrong.
